Battle-tested tools for effective leadership

Good leadership is common sense. But it’s certainly not common practice.

Why I Created Saturn Leadership

Over the years, I’ve realized that once people understand what good leadership looks like, they can move very quickly into embodying a new set of practices.

I created Saturn Leadership to provide practical, easy-to-use tools to teach leaders how to communicate effectively and lead powerfully, as leaders and as people.

I spent many years studying leadership at respected universities and at least ten years leading workshops around the world on different aspects of leadership (mostly on the behalf of the Harvard Negotiation Program).

I couldn’t find a model that explicitly defined what leadership was in a concrete way.

In 2003, I started a project to define leadership behaviorally—what do good leaders do and how can leadership be measured? I put together a list of 100 behaviors that could be objectively measured—things that people do or don’t do—and started to use that list to help leaders identify their blindspots.  Almost two decades later, that list is now 46 behaviors that have helped many CEOs identify their blindspots and learn to lead.

I built this model to help my startup CEO clients, but it’s been so effective that I created this company and non-profit to share this work in the world with anyone who wants to learn how to lead.

The world is in a dire place where the future of humanity is now at stake. Saturn Leadership’s mission is to build the next generation of leaders so that our children have clean water to drink and a world where they can thrive

“Jason and his firm’s assessment tools helped me increase the accountability, decision-making and transparency across my leadership teams. I got precise feedback, made small changes in how I led, and saw immediate results.”

— Ron Favaron, Spredfast Chairman, CEO (Exited)

Powered by pioneering behavioral tools and data visualization software, the SLI Leadership Plan is the most comprehensive and actionable growth curriculum available, providing an auditable week-by-week guide to micro-changes that transform leadership.

Part I, Self-Assessment, maps how leaders rate themselves across key aspects of communications, leadership and organizational trust. Addressing 46 micro-behaviors in all, the SLI Self-Assessment is the fastest way to identify your blindspots and see how you do at the behaviors great leaders master. I invite everybody to take it here

Part II, 360, goes deeper, with one of our experts asking your cohort how you do across the same micro-behaviors. You nominate a mix of anonymous and on-the-record colleagues, and we’ll ask them how you best communicate and lead.

Embedded Coaching

The Saturn Leadership tools are available for everyone to use individually and for internal HR leaders and embedded coaches who are building team cultures.

Saturn helps clients hire a full-time, salaried coach who we train to use our playbook. They are fully dedicated to coach your leaders, develop your individual contributors and build a high-performance culture.

Saturn’s goal is for leadership skills to be more readily available to the people who want to make a difference in the world. We believe that all people managers should have a coach and this is the best use of resources for a company—hire someone internally who knows the culture, leads leadership programs, provides 1:1 and spot coaching, and can help build a culture of accountability and collaboration.
