What’s the Connection??

“The important thing is this: To be ready at any moment to sacrifice what you are for what you could become.” — Charles Dubois

The personal section of my website is intended to provide resources that may be useful to friends. At first glance, it may seem like I have a lot of diverse interests, but all of these past-times are linked in one fundamental way–they are all about learning the patterns in which I/we operate and breaking through those patterns for the sake of both excellence in the activity as well as personal growth. Becoming aware of my patterns–rather than operating from unknown or unconscious principles–gives me choice and aliveness. This is the essence of my personal passion as well as the source of my professional service. Plus, breaking through patterns is a whole lot of fun.

So, to be more specific, improvisational comedy helps me to see what roles I typically play, and allows me to try on roles that I would not be gutsy enough to play in day-to-day life. In doing so, I can see my personal boundaries and that awareness gives me more choice. Sports & outdoor adventures help me to see where my fears and limiting beliefs stop me. Every time I think I am at the brink of exhaustion, sports remind me that I can always reach deeper, get present in the moment, and take that next step. Meditation helps me see how I get uncomfortable with silence and helps me accept how things are. And perhaps most importantly, all my body practices–aikido, dance, partner movement, etc.–help me see how the shape of my body is connected with how I experience and live my life, so that I can more powerfully choose how I want to embody who I am–being a stronger leader standing up for what’s important to me, and likewise, letting go of those things that are not important to me.
